I soon felt like a sucker as it becomes obvious that the accountancy thing is just a wispy curtain to disguise the onset of a huge Mary Sue wish fulfilment of a plot. He loses his job but is approached by a freelance monster killing agency who are recruiting.

Pitt, an accountant, manages to throw his hitherto merely annoying but suddenly ferocious werewolf boss out of a fourteenth floor window during a fight for his life.

I downloaded this because it was free and the intro sounded interesting.

But, if you like guns and blowing stuff up, then this is definitely the book for you. Very James Bond-esque.Īs the title says, I'm clearly not the demographic this book is targetting and, if not for a need to finish what I start, I would have put this book down early on in the piece. Yes, it's an action adventure and yes, there are a couple of women characters in the book, but the whole thing just didn't sit well with me. The other issue I have is the "tough-guy blowing up things solves everything" attitude that is prevalent throughout. There is a LOT of detail on the guns which, as a non-gun toting, non-American I personally struggled with as it tended to pull me out of the story. For me, that's what really put me off Monster Hunter International. If you're not into guns and a somewhat mysoginistic portrayal of life then give it a miss. The plot is interesting with some nice, if maybe a litte too-well telegraphed, plot twists and kept me reading. It's really well written with great pacing, never getting bogged down in the details but still packing a punch of world building. If you love urban fantasy, macho action and guns then this is the book for you. I'm all for a bit of blow the baddies away in my books and movies but I stop short at wanting to hear the drooling and fervent masturbation every time the author gives technical details and specifications for the armoury used!! Gun porn is not my thing and personally I think it detracted from the smooth flow of the story. I realise the author is a complete gun NUTjob (and leaves me questioning his mental health given some interviews I've read) but coming from a country that is not gun infatuated and does have some control measures, I found the wanton worship and ensuing flagellation in relation to "guns with a capital G" REALLY off putting. and I'll say now I'm not entering into any arguments, so the haters can go and hate somewhere else. I know it might start a sh*#storm for some of those from the U.S.

cause this novel would seriously be a 5 if it wasn't for the following reason. With a cast of characters featuring the mercenary, the weird and the plain dorky (yep - that's our main character for you!) and a host of nasties to dispatch posthaste this is one action filled extravaganza that leaves you totally spent by the end.Īnd now the bad bit. And I mean seriously, who hasn't thought of throwing their boss out the window. A hulk of a man with the worst father/son relationship EVER, but one that ultimately gave him the skills to be invited to join the infamous Monster Hunters International. The novel starts out with the most exciting, action driven and yet hilariously funny introduction to our main character. This was the absolute BOMB - like literally!! MHI is a total slice and dice, mow them down with everything in the arsenal, visceral, kill fest of all things bad and creepy crawly.
